The word 'angel' comes from the Roman angelus or Greek aggelos meaning simply 'messenger', because the main purpose of angels in the Bible is simply to bear messages from God to His people. Some do intervene directly, for instance in leading the Israelites out of Egypt, destroying the armies of Sennacherib when they beseiged Jerusalem, or rescuing the apostles from prison. Their usual purpose, though, is simply to convey God's messages.
