I FIRST CAME ACROSS this Ernst painting in the late 60s on the cover of a JG Ballard novel which luckily mentioned where the illustration came from. SF and Fantasy book covers were a great source of art at the time and, as with records, one often bought a book on the strength of the cover, sometimes very disappointingly but you still had the cover to look at by way of compensation. In this case the book was luckily also a great read.
