I FIRST CAME ACROSS NORMAN LINDSAY'S ART, the picture above in fact, on the cover of an Oz magazine (No33 Feb/Mar 1971) and was blown away and not a little shocked by its outrageous exuberance. Which of course was the intention of his fellow Australians Richard Neville & Co who had launched the magazine on an unsuspecting British audience after being chased out of Oz with charges of obscenity; charges which they were again to face in London in a landmark trial as significant as that against Lady Chatterly's Lover in the 60s. In 1940 in the face of a possible Japanese invasion Lindsay took sixteen crates of his work to the US for safety, only to have them confiscated by Customs on the grounds of being pornographic and burned. He is reported to have shrugged and said 'Oh well, I can always do more.' Which he did in abundance. |
