The area where I live is dotted with sandstone outcrops sometimes topped by trees whose roots often undertake extraordinary contortions to keep them standing. Here the roots have reached out away from the rock almost like legs to form almost a cavern that with little imagination could be an entrance to an underground gnome dwelling.
